Short CV

Valdemar Máximo (VM) graduated in Biology in 1994 in Coimbra University where he continued as a Master student, in 1995/1996 studying the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in schizophrenia. VM did his PhD in 2001 at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) in a project developed at Ipatimup and Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. Due to his expertise in mitochondria, VM introduced at Ipatimup the interest on the role played by mitochondrial abnormalities in cancer. As a Post-doc he continued focusing his research on this topic, clarifying the role mtDNA abnormalities in tumor development leading to his recognition as an international reference scientist in the field. In 2007, VM was hired as a Ciência 2007 researcher at Ipatimup and since then he built a research team focusing on one of the hottest areas of cancer research ? cancer metabolism. VM has supervised MSc and PhD students as well as Post-docs. Presently, VM is a PI of a team studying ? Cancer as a metabolic disease. VM is an Auxiliary Professor of Biopathology at the FMUP. He has published 94 peer-reviewed papers, with over 5.565 citations by other authors and with an h-index of 35.
